There were ghosts, there were ghouls and there were definitely some monstrous sounds coming from the sound system when Leroy Peppers stepped up to the decks to record this live set from “A Night of Terrifying Bass”. This monster of a set was over 4 hours long so turn off the lights and hold on tight, these sounds will rattle you down to your bones! And even though this was a Halloween set be sure to listen for the Easter Eggs at the end

A part of the famed Dirtybird crew, Leroy Peppers, AKA Christian Martin, along with high-profile DJs Claude VonStroke, J. Philip, Worthy and brother Justin Martin are synonymous for deep bassy house and tech-house tracks. Dubbed “Dirtybird Bass”, their style and sound is unique.

“Since 1995, Christian Martin has explored electronic music from one end of the earth to the other; from full-moon parties in the deserts of California to the thumping, dark corners of the London club scene. Christian followed his love for spleen-rattling bass to San Francisco in 2000, where he met up with the now legendary Dirtybird crew. Ten years later the original Dirtybird crew remains fully intact and as close-knit as ever – traversing the globe, releasing records, and throwing the best parties in their wake.”

As we gear up for Decibel Festival 2012 we are very excited to present Axel Boman, co-founder of Studio Barnhus together with Petter (Border Community) and local idiot Kornél Kovacs, has delivered the latest alga-pod .05 exclusively for alga-rhythms. This mix truly showcases his twisted mix of melodic mind bending house, techno, and just about anything else that makes people shake what their mamma gave em! Its no surprise Resident Advisor made him their top pick for the entire Decibel Festival! Gotta love those Swedish house weirdos! We know we do!

Axel is in fact the Swedish word for shoulder, but born and bred Stockholmer Mr. Boman could just as easily have been named Rumpa, the Swedish word for ass, since most of his life has been dedicated to moving just that body part. It was around 1992 that Axel’s ass started dragging the confused youngster into all sorts of weird situations – dodgy warehouses, blooming fields, sweaty basements – just about any place that had a nice sound system and someone pumping a fat bassline through it. With his older brother already being a collector of the latest techno and house records, Axel started keeping a strict diet of fresh beats which has kept him alive and kicking ever since. Building a reputation for himself in the small but very friendly Stockholm club scene, he was soon acknowledged as one of Sweden’s most skillful and best looking DJ dudes.

Naturally, production activity followed shortly. Working out of small studios in his hometown as well as in Gothenburg (where Axel took his master degree in fine art), tracks like the underground hit “Arcimboldo” on Ourvision Recordings soon landed in the crates of connoisseurs like DJ Koze, Magda and Seth Troxler. His sounds is raw, playful and drenched in oceans of soul – just the kind of stuff the dancefloor’s of today are longing for.

2010 was the big breakthrough year for Axel and his ass, with the epic screw house anthem “Purple Drank” being released on DJ Koze’s new Pampa Records imprint, going off to London to participate in the Red Bull Music Academy and starting up his own label Studio Barnhus together with Petter (Border Community) and local idiot Kornél Kovacs. 2011 will see Axel releasing a lot of new material and remixes on labels like Permanent Vacation, Moodmusic, Glass Table, Hypercolour, Tartelet and of course Studio Barnhus. Cheers!

Introducing Apolinario Ancheta, an alga-rhythms dj/producer who is also a highly trained giant squid hunter, greatly respected within the giant squid hunting community. This elusive animal has captivated the imaginations of many people over centuries and his unorthodox methods have won him praise by an odd mixture of people: biologists, sushi chefs, and electronic music producers worldwide.

Apolinario employs a specific range of music from House to Techno that he pulsates into the deep seas to lure the creatures so he can study their behavior and ultimately understand what makes them so fucking creepy to most people. The secret to his success can be attributed to the specific style of music that he selects, “I theorized long ago that since these animals live so far deep in the ocean, I must find the deepest tracks available to be able to reach them”. Whether it’s deep house, deep techno, or anywhere in between, the giant squid can’t resist these specific sounds “it just stuns them”.

Before today there was yesterday and after tomorrow is the future. Elyte and Cnyce’s paths were crossed for all time when a Sun Ra light beam sent from Saturn collided with the P-Funk Mothership and sent them tumbling to earth. Now, Soul Clap time travels on a musical spaceship of dopeness…

By harnessing the past Soul Clap looks to the future. After releasing their first records on Airdrop, they spread their wings with a series of game changing edits, originals and remixes for the Wolf + Lamb/Double Standard collective. The last year has seen The Clap release 2010′s summer anthem, Extravaganza and mix an edition of the legendary DJ Kicks series which included the stand out single, Lonely C and a 2 month tour around the world playing 6+ hour DJ sets. Their reputation for timeless reworks has led to remixing legends Laid Back, Robert Owens, Raze and DJ Harvey as well as modern pop stars like Metronomy, Foster The People and Theophilus London. With summers spent touring the world and winters in Miami training at ping-pong and charting new musical territory, Soul Clap continues their quest to be the hardest working duo in the game.

Two people bonded by love and friendship. Since they’ve been friends and playing the same shows around the Pacific Northwest for better part of 8 years. From both playing at a Canadian iceberg in 2003, to secret parties around Industrial NW Portland, Decibel Festival, to most recently at a rave on Caterpillar island between Oregon and Washington, it’s been an adventure we’ve both been lucky enough to experience.

PILLOWTALK Live
Wolf + Lamb, Visionquest, Life & Death – SF

PillowTalk is Sammy D, Ryan Williams and Michael Tello. Based out of the famous Lower Haight District in San Francisco, PillowTalk’s music fuses classic R&B, boogie and disco with underground house and techno with an original feel. With releases out on Visionquest, Life & Death and Wolf + Lamb, 2012 is shaping up to be a huge year as they hit the road with the live band.

It all started when they found themselves up late, gathered around the baby grand piano in Ryan’s kitchen. Tello would be strumming on guitar and Sammy would be fiddling around on the Wurlitzer. It all just came together organically…without knowing it, melodies would form, songs would appear and before anyone realized, Sammy would be singing some off-hand hook and, hey presto, you had what Arthur Russell would call; “first thought, best thought” compositions.

Soon, these impromptu and improvised jam sessions were recorded on iPhone apps before being taken to ‘the lab” (a space about two blocks away) and from there they were transformed into alluring, charming, dance-pop ‘songs’.

With experience of, and backgrounds in, so many genres, Pillow Talk are making some seriously inspiring and beautifully original music. If you’re trying to pin down their exact sound you may have to refer to their motto of ‘D.A.G’ (destroy all genres – a term borrowed from a famed underground San Fran DJ). With influences ranging from the Beach Boys to Sam Cooke, from Freddie Hubbard to Harry Nilsson, and from Larry Heard to Theo Parrish, you can tell these guys are ruled from the right side of their brains. Having just started composing, this trio are still finding their own true groove, with their full potential yet to be explored…

A delightful debut single (‘Love Makes Parks’ on the revered Visionquest imprint) is soon to be followed by a beautiful full length on Life and Death, before following that up with another finely crafted EP for NYC house darlings, Wolf + Lamb. As well as that, a live show is in the works, soon to be debuted later this year. We look forward to following this fresh and exciting new sound and realize some of your deepest secrets are revealed “Pillow Talking”, so we are just lucky to listen in…

Portland’s own, Dorian Duvall creates fresh, original electronic music as Onuinu. Both dancey and atmospheric, his music features melodic processed vocals over ethereal drum machine beats. His music truly exudes a new school soulfulness by way of an old school format: the classic cassette tape! Find his music on Apes Tapes Records, an artist run label founded in Portland Oregon, releasing music on both cassette tape and often with free digital downloads. The alga-rhythms collective is extremely excited to feature Onuinu tonight.
